Gretchen Albrecht: Shadow of Land

The artist speaks to surface, chance, and the intimacy of copper.

Shadow of Land, presented at Two Rooms, sees Gretchen Albrecht return to copper as both surface and collaborator. Long associated with her practice, these works move away from the physical scale of canvas painting towards a more intimate mode of looking — one that foregrounds touch, proximity, and material responsiveness.

Filmed between the gallery and the artist’s garden, this walkthrough traces the unpredictable processes underpinning the exhibition. Albrecht speaks to patination, chemical reaction, and the moments when chance begins to direct painterly decision-making, allowing the work to sit somewhere between control and surrender.
