Tawhai Rickard: Retro Man

Painting, pop iconography, and power in play

In Tawhai Rickard: 2020–2025 (Retro Man), the artist draws together figurative painting, whakapapa, and pop cultural reference to stage a wry meditation on power, history, and representation. Shown at Tim Melville in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the exhibition brings together works from across the past five years, unified by a visual language that is at once playful and pointed.

In this artist-led walkthrough, Rickard reflects on the sources shaping his practice — from the painted panels of his ancestral wharenui to the familiar symbols of cards, arcade games, and public figures. The video offers a glimpse into how humour, portraiture, and pop aesthetics operate as vehicles for cultural commentary, without flattening their complexity.
