Corban Clause Williams at Melbourne Art Fair 2026

The artist reflects on painting Country, desert colour, and ancestral connection.

Corban Clause Williams is a Martumili artist and art worker whose paintings are grounded in direct engagement with Country. In this floor talk recorded at Melbourne Art Fair 2026, Williams speaks about travelling to his grandfather’s Country — observing the desert’s shifting colour and the transformation that follows heavy rain, when the land returns to life.

Working from Martumili Art Centre in Newman, Western Australia, Williams develops canvases shaped by memory, place, and lived experience. The “deserty colour” he describes is not fixed; it intensifies and renews itself after rain, carrying both environmental change and inherited knowledge.

Floor Talk is an ongoing series of artist-led conversations recorded at art fairs across Aotearoa, Australia, and the Pacific.
