Chevron Hassett: Aroha Ki Te Tangata

The artist speaks reclaimed domestic materials, urban Māori memory, and the architecture of migration.

In Aroha Ki Te Tangata, Chevron Hassett presents a sculptural installation grounded in mauri — an exploration of essence, memory, and transformation. Constructed from reclaimed timbers sourced from demolished homes across Tāmaki Makaurau and Tai Tokerau, the work evokes the architecture of domestic life while carrying the traces of many former dwellings.

This filmed walkthrough moves through the exhibition with the artist, focusing on the central platform structure and its carved surfaces, inscribed kupu, and spatial references to Māori urban migration. Rather than offering a complete reading, the video invites viewers into the material and symbolic language of the work — where touch, movement, and presence remain integral to its meaning.
