Monica Rani Rudhar on heritage, fragility and the material language of memory

In this video, Monica Rani Rudhar speaks about the body of work she is showing with Föenander Galleries at the Aotearoa Art Fair.

Monica Rani Rudhar reflects on making as a way of reconnecting with inherited knowledge. Her work becomes a material response to distance — a means of accessing stories, skills and cultural memory that are otherwise held through oral history and fragmented transmission.

At the centre of her practice is an awareness of fragility: the fragility of materials, and the fragility of the histories they hold. Rudhar considers how both can shift, degrade or disappear, and how artistic practice can function as a form of care or preservation.

Her work positions objects as active carriers of memory, and in doing so, traces the continuity between labour, lineage and storytelling — where making becomes a way of sustaining connection across generations.
